Pay stub vs 1099 income: which documents apply
Employees receive pay stubs during the year and a W-2 afterward, with taxes withheld. Independent contractors usually receive no pay stubs. The payer reports what it paid on a 1099 form, often a 1099-NEC, and taxes are generally not withheld. So a pay stub documents employee pay, while contractor income is documented with 1099s, tax returns and bank records.

Two kinds of worker, two paper trails
An employee is paid through payroll. The employer withholds income tax, Social Security and Medicare, issues a pay stub each pay date and sends a W-2 after year-end. An independent contractor is paid per invoice or job. The payer generally withholds nothing and reports the payments on a 1099 form once they pass a reporting threshold, and the contractor handles their own taxes.
Whether a worker is an employee or a contractor is a legal and tax question that depends on the relationship, and this guide does not decide it. It describes the documents each arrangement normally produces, so a reviewer can tell what they are holding. Pay stub vs W-2 covers the employee side, and income documents for self-employed applicants covers the contractor side.
How to tell which documents apply
Start with how the person is paid, then confirm against the paper.
-
Ask how the applicant is paid
Through an employer's payroll with taxes withheld, or by invoice, platform or client payments? The answer sets the document list.
-
Look at the document itself
A payroll stub shows withholding lines such as federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, plus year-to-date totals. A platform or client statement usually does not.
-
Check the year-end form
A W-2 comes from an employer. A 1099-NEC, 1099-K or 1099-MISC comes from a payer, platform or payment network. These generally arrive by the end of January.
-
Separate mixed income
An applicant with a W-2 job and side work has two kinds of income. Review the stubs for the job, and the 1099s and returns for the rest.
-
Request by the requester's checklist
Lender, program and landlord lists differ. Ask for what the list names for each kind of income.
Worker types and the documents they usually have
Usual patterns, not rules: arrangements vary, and the requester's checklist decides what to collect.
| Worker | Per-period document | Year-end form | Tax withheld | Commonly requested |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Employee | Pay stub | W-2 | Yes | Recent stubs; W-2 for earlier years |
| Contractor or freelancer | Invoices and payment records, no pay stub | 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC | Generally no | 1099s, tax returns with Schedule C, bank statements |
| Gig or platform worker | Platform earnings statement, not a payroll stub | 1099-NEC or 1099-K, by platform | Generally no | Platform statements, 1099s, tax returns |
| S corporation owner paid a wage | Pay stub from the company's own payroll | W-2, plus Schedule K-1 for the ownership share | On the wage, yes | Stubs, business and personal returns |
| Partner or LLC member taxed as a partnership | Usually none | Schedule K-1 | Generally no | Business and personal returns, K-1s |
| Employee with side work | Stub for the job | W-2 and 1099 | On wages only | Stubs for the job; 1099s and returns for the side income |
What goes wrong
-
A statement mistaken for a stub
Contractors often hold a client or platform statement with gross and net columns. With no withholding lines there is nothing for a net-pay check to test, as gross vs net pay describes, and no payroll YTD chain.
-
1099 totals read as profit
A 1099 reports gross payments to the contractor, before business expenses. Net business income comes from the tax return.
-
1099-K amounts treated as all income
A 1099-K reports card and payment-network transactions, which can include amounts that are not income, such as refunds and transfers.
-
Missing the mixed case
A W-2 job plus a side business means two sets of documents. Reviewing only the stubs ignores the second income, and counting it needs its own support. Landlord screening meets this often, and pay stubs for rental applications describes the usual requests.
-
Deciding classification from the paperwork
Whether someone is an employee or a contractor is a legal question this guide does not decide. A reviewer works with the documents the applicant actually has.
How VerifyStub helps
VerifyStub reads employee pay stubs. It does not read W-2s, 1099s, tax returns, invoices or platform statements, and one of those uploaded here will most likely be rejected with a message that no pay stub figures were found. If the applicant has a W-2 job, its stubs can go through the pay stub to CSV page (free: 1 file per day, up to 10 pages, no account) for the net-pay and YTD checks, while the rest of the file is reviewed by hand. See pricing for plans.
Scope. VerifyStub checks arithmetic on the pay stubs you upload. It does not detect altered documents, verify employment or income, or give lending, legal or tax advice. Rules and policies differ by lender, program, landlord and jurisdiction.
Pay stub vs 1099 income: common questions
Do 1099 workers get pay stubs?
Usually not. A payer pays a contractor per invoice or job and reports the total on a 1099 form, so the paper trail is invoices, 1099s and the contractor's own tax return. Some platforms issue earnings statements, which are not payroll stubs.
What replaces a pay stub for a contractor?
Requesters commonly ask for tax returns with their schedules, 1099 forms, a year-to-date profit and loss statement and bank statements. The exact list depends on the lender, program or landlord.
Can a person have both a W-2 and a 1099 in one year?
Yes. Someone with a job may also do side work or change status during a year. Each kind of income is documented separately, with stubs and a W-2 for the job and 1099s and returns for the rest.
What is the difference between a 1099-NEC, 1099-K and 1099-MISC?
A 1099-NEC reports payments to non-employees for services. A 1099-K reports payment-card and third-party network transactions. A 1099-MISC reports certain other payments, such as rents or royalties. Which one applies depends on how and what the payer pays.
Is 1099 income the same as profit?
No. A 1099 shows gross payments received. Business expenses are deducted on the tax return to reach net income, which is the figure requesters commonly work from.
Do business owners get pay stubs?
An owner of a corporation who pays themselves a wage runs it through payroll and gets stubs. Sole proprietors and partners generally do not. Requesters often look at business returns for owners as well as stubs.
Can VerifyStub read a 1099?
No. It reads pay stubs only. A 1099, W-2 or bank statement uploaded to it will most likely be rejected with a message that no pay stub figures were found.
